The Classroom of Love in Saigon has been taught by Truong Ngoc Khanh since 1990.
Khanh is a college student majoring in Literature in Saigon General University.
Outside the irregular schedule of the college classes and the odd jobs to supplement his
income, Khanh has continued to teach his group of young students regularly.
The classroom size has doubled since the beginning, with over 60 students currently
ranging from 8 to 16 years old. They are divided into 3 classes: 2nd,
3rd and 4th grade. The class schedule is:
4th grade: from 13:00-16:00 on Mon, Tue,
Wed, Fri and Sat
3rd grade: from 16:00-18:00 on Mon, Tue, Wed, Fri and
Sat
2nd grade: from 19:00-20:30 on Tue, Thu and Sat
With Khanh's busy schedule, the class has been receiving extra lessons from Mrs. Tran Thi Kim Lien. Mrs Lien is a widow who is raising 2 young children by herself.
In the last few years, Lua Viet has been supporting the class by paying for expenses such as class supplies, simple furnitures, electricity, maintenance, etc. In addition, Lua Viet also provides a small stipend for the two teachers to help relieve a part of their difficult lives. Khanh also receives some assistance in his college tuition.
The children have been attending school regularly and are growing. Their basic education includes history, geography, reading, writing, science, art as well as games and songs. Each month, Khanh would buy children books and magazines to encourage them to read and increase their understanding. Another of Khanh's wish is to find someone who can give the children vocational education such as sewing, auto repair, etc.
Khanh has been preparing and organizing tests for the children similarly to the regular school. He prepares annual grade reports and gives out little awards for students who has done well in the class.
